ARTICLES: HOW TO TREAT CD SCRATCHES

CD scratches can be treated depending on the depth of the scratch. Although the scratches may not totally disappear, but at least it may lessen the crackling noise and the skips. Here are a few tips on how to treat your scratched CDs.

1. Clean your CD thoroughly. Refer to our Tips article "How To Care For Your CDs" on proper cleaning procedures.

2. Identify the scratches on the recorded side of the CD. Look for the heavy scratch marks.

3. Squeeze a small amount of white toothpaste (not the ones with granules, use the plain white paste) on your pointer finger and damp it over the scratches on your CDs.

4. Put some drop of clean water on the disc.

5. Place the disc on a flat steady surface.

6. With one hand securing the disc in place, slowly rub the paste on the scratches with your other hand's pointer finger in a circular counter-clockwise move applying a gentle pressure. Do this for a few seconds or until you think that you have even up the surface of the scratch.

7. Do not over-do this process. Doing so, may worsen the disc status and may result to a totally damaged disc.

8. Rinse the disc well with running tap water from the faucet.

9. Shake off excess water from the disc surface and wipe dry with clean soft cloth.

10. Make sure that the disc is dry and free from excess water before putting it into your players.

There you go! If you do it correctly, you may have even up the sides of the scratches on the surface of the disc. This should lessen the unwanted noise and the skips due to the scratches.
